Film and television actor Sonny Carl Davis will be the special guest during the University Cinema’s screening of “The Whole Shootin’ Match” on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Bay Hall, Room 103, at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
The screening, which is part of the Seven Cinema Classics” film series, is free and open to the public. Davis will discuss the film and answer questions following the screening.
The Whole Shootin’ Match (1978), long unavailable for viewing, has been restored and reissued in DVD format by Watchmaker Films. Directed by the late Eagle Pennell, “The Whole Shootin’ Match,” starring Davis and the late Lou Perryman, is a pioneering work of Texas independent filmmaking in the 1970’s. The film was shot in and around Austin and is saturated with the regional flavor of rural central Texas. Rich in humor and pathos, the plot tells the story of two good ol’ boys looking for a way to get rich.
Davis has appeared in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (1982), “Last Night at the Alamo” (1984), “Lonesome Dove” (1989), “Thelma & Louise” (1991), “Fair Game” (1994), “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” (2001), “The Santa Trap” (2002), “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada” (2005) and the recently-completed “Javelina.” (2009).

--SEE AN INTERESTING DOC AND MEET THE FILMMAKERS
This Friday, there\'s a must attend local film event. If you can go, you should...and here\'s why:
You want NEW film events in CC? You want ALT film events in CC? They only happen if someone creates them. Someone is trying and this event needs your support.
TAMUCC has hired a new Comm professor, Edward Tyndall, who\'s ready to get some stuff moving. He and fellow prof Ethan Thompson have created a screening series called South Texas Cinematheque that will be bringing internationally recognized documentary filmmakers to CC for screenings.
The first one is this Friday:
“South Texas Cinémathèque,” a new film series that will bring internationally recognized documentary filmmakers to Corpus Christi, debuts with a screening of “Noah’s Arc,” on Friday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the H-E-B Auditorium of the Art Museum of South Texas.
“Noah’s Arc” directed by David Redmon and Ashley Sabin follows international modeling scouts as they scour Siberian landscapes in search of teen girls to transform into models. The 85-minute film explores how these teens navigate the world of commercial advertising while attempting to launch careers in Tokyo, Japan. Following the screening, Redmon and Sabin will discuss their film with the audience. Previous films by Redmon and Sabin have been shown at leading film festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival and South by Southwest.
“South Texas Cinémathèque,” which is sponsored by Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and the Art Museum of South Texas,” is designed to broaden South Texas residents’ access to innovative independent films. The series will host three filmmakers each year.
The Art Museum of South Texas, located at 1902 N. Shoreline Blvd., is affiliated with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The film series is free to the public. For more about the filmmakers, go to http://www.carnivalesquefilms.com/. For more information, call 361.825.2296.

CC Cinema Series: Creating ‘The Documentary Experience'
|
|
Posted by JKHilliard on 2009/2/24 7:35:12 (493 reads)
|
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s University Cinema will highlight important films that demonstrate a variety of approaches to documentary filmmaking in the eight film series, “The Documentary Experience” beginning Wednesday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Bay Hall, Room 104.
Documentary topics range from a profile of the controversial artist Christo in “The Gates” to the search for the killer of a filmmaker in “Stranger with a Camera.” The films were selected by Dr. Bill Huie, professor of communication and TV-film, who will speak briefly about each documentary before its screening.
“These films are excellent examples of different approaches to documentary filmmaking,” said Huie. “Whether the filmmaker is simply recording events or asking questions to illicit truths that may have remained hidden, they provide new perspectives on our experience and open doors to new ways of looking at things.”
The films in the series are:
March 4: “The Gates” (2007, 87 minutes) – This film by Albert and David Maysles, Antonio Ferrera and Matthew Prinzing chronicles the artist Christo’s project to adorn New York’s Central Park sidewalks with orange “gates.”
March 25: “Third Avenue: Only the Strong Survive” ( 1980, 58 minutes) – Directed by Jon Alpert and Keiko Tsuno, this film examines the neighborhoods and residents along New York’s Third Avenue as documented by Downtown Community Television.
“No Lies” (1972, 16 minutes) – In this film by Mitchell Block, a student filmmaker’s relentless quizzing of his girlfriend leads to a shocking revelation.
April 1: “Six O’ Clock News” (1997, 103 minutes) – This personal film essay by Ross McElwee looks more deeply into stories reported in the news, with reflections by the filmmaker, a new father, on the world his son will face.
April 8: “The Times of Harvey Milk” (1984, 87 minutes) – The profound social tensions surrounding the assassinations of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone are revealed in this film by Robert Epstein and Richard Schmeicher.
April 15: “Stranger with a Camera” (2000, 58 minutes) – Filmmaker Elizabeth Barret investigates the murder of another filmmaker in her hometown in Appalachia.
April 22: “Always for Pleasure” (1978, 58 minutes) – In this film, Les Blank celebrates the festive energy of New Orleans culture.
“Voices from Steeltown” (1983, 28 minutes) – Spicing his film with wit and humor, Tony Buba examines the economic decline of his hometown.
April 29: “El General” (2009, 83 minutes) – Family memory intersects with political and social history in Natalia Almada’s investigation of her great-grandfather, former Mexican President Plutarco Calles.
All movies will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays in Bay Hall, Room 104, and are free and open to the public. For more information, call 361.825.2316.

Her plan is to win the State Powerlifting Competition and the scholarship that goes with it in order to attend college in the big city with her brother when he gets out of the military. Luz’s plans are thrown for a loop when a soldier from her small town dies in Afghanistan and her brother’s tour there is extended. As her dreams slip away, Luz must dig deep to overcome the social and economic undertows that keep many kids from venturing out. Intended Audience: This is an independent film project intended for festival exposure and distribution in some form thereafter. Production is currently scheduled for Summer 2009. CHARACTER BREAKDOWN FOR TEXAS PROJECT: LUZ (17) A high school Senior. Luz is strong physically from many hours of powerlifting. She also has a quiet inner strength fueled by optimism, but anger sometimes gets the best of her. She struggles to balance the hard work required by school and powerlifting with the feelings she has for her trouble-making boyfriend. These worlds pull her in opposite directions. She’s very tight with her family, especially her big brother JM. YASMIN (18) Luz’s sister and 6 months pregnant. Yasmin is more relaxed about life. She’s not as ambitious as Luz, but she knows herself better, and she’s happy with her life. Yasmin lives at home with Luz and the family, as does Yasmin’s boyfriend, Luis. They don’t yet have plans to get married, but they love each other and expect to raise the baby together. Yasmin works long hours on her feet at Whataburger to bring in extra cash. JM (22) Their brother. He is the star of the family and the one that Luz looks up to most. He joined the Marines out of high school (where he was voted “Most Likely to Succeed”) so that he could go to college on the GI Bill after his service. He has spent the last 8 months in Iraq. He is serious like Luz, but more in control of his emotions. ROSANA (41) Their mother. Rosana works many hours a week as a health care provider in another town. She’s involved as much as she can be with raising the children, but her commute and long hours cause her to be gone much of the time. ABUELA (70) Their grandmother. She is the glue that holds the family together. She cooks, cleans, worries, and calls upon Curanderismo for solutions to most problem. LUIS (20) Yasmin’s boyfriend and the father of their soon-to-be-born child. Luis works in the oil fields and lives with Yasmin’s family. He is a tough-love, hard-working, realist. With JM in Iraq and Luz’s father not in the picture, Luis considers himself the “man of the household.” In that capacity, he is very supportive of Luz’s powerlifting, though he doesn’t necessarily agree that she should want to leave town or go to college. RAYNALDO (18) Luz’s boyfriend. Raynaldo doesn’t think much about school or what he is going to do after graduating. He’s about the here and now. He’s into Luz and respects her for working hard, but doubts it’s worth the effort. He runs with a wild crowd. CARLOS (17) A Junior at Luz’s high school. Carlos thinks big, perhaps too big. He plans to be a rap star or an Army Tank Commander, but he’s got a problem – he keeps getting caught with drugs. Regardless, Carlos has an infectious personality and is often the life of the party.
