Once a month or so on KWM we will do a 'Sweet Sixteen.' We pick a genre and then attempt to identify the 16 best films in that genre. Typically it involves arguments, crying and fistfights. Then the 16 films are paired up to go head to head in sudden death elimination. After 4 rounds (16 down to 8; 8 down to 4; 4 down to 2; 2 down to the winner), we've found the BEST of that genre....or not.. We can't stress enough that Rockbusters is STOLEN. Rockbusters was created by Ricky Gervais on his English radio program. Do yourself a HUGE favor and get into The Ricky Gervais Show Podcast. How to Play: Each week around 9:30 AM Joe gives the initials of two bands or musical artists along with a 'cryptic' clue that relates to the band or musical artists' names. Example: Initial is B; Clue is 'Put some shrimp, minnows and worms in there and turn it up to 350.'
Shrimp, minnows and worms are 'bait'; Something you put things into and turn up to 350 is an 'oven'. You got yourself a 'bait oven'...or....Beethoven Horrible. Another example: Initials are LB; Clue is 'This roll is too soggy to eat.' Synonym for roll that start with B? 'Biscuit'. Another word for soggy? 'Limp'...kind of. 'Limp Biscuit' or Limp Bizkit Ugh! Here are the Rockbusters we've done on the show so far. Click and drag over the answers you want to see. |

I'm loving a new show on AMC called Movies that Shook the World. Each Friday at 9PM Central they take an in depth look into a movie that changed everything about films and filmmaking and in some cases, was a social touchstone. The first two episodes were about The Graduate and Birth of a Nation. Tomorrow's is Fatal Attraction and next Friday's is The Exorcist. Fitting since next Sunday (10/30) we are screening The Exorcist at TAMUCC. I hope you all go to that event co-sponsored by Matinee Cafe--more info.
Also, on newsstands now (try Barnes and Noble) is a magazine really worth picking up for both active and armchair filmmakers: MovieMaker Magazine's annual Filmmaker's Guide. This is a great magazine and a great issue.

Haunted Houses: Found two more haunted houses...I think. (10/27)
Now we're talking! Nothing beats a well made, well run haunted house. Coming from Houston I've seen some killers. The local haunted house I went to last year left a lot to be desired. Here are the few that I know about. If there are more out there or if you have been to one of these and can report on it, let me know. Fright Night Haunted House - Promising web site for this haunted house near Bill Witt Park that's been around in some incarnation since 1984 $10 Haunt - The newest haunted house in town. Can't miss the looming beast at the corner of Everhart and SPID. Their beast has gathered a few complaints that made the news. $8 Al Amin Shrine Haunted House - Located at I-37 and Suntide at the Shrine Temple. $5 Shipwreck of Horror - New haunted house in Flour Bluff - In the mini mall behind Funtrackers $? Harbor Playhouse - October 27 - 31 - It runs Thursday through Monday, 7 to midnight. The theme is called "An Ode to Horror Films," and it is SPECTACULAR! Seriously, it's really scary. I walked through the final dress rehearsal this afternoon. The tour walks through three floors of the building and uses talented actors and LOTS of gore. I am very impressed. And finally, someone told me about a haunted house on the 2nd floor of Sunrise Mall. If you know more about it, let me know.
Halloween Alternatives If ghouls and goblins aren't your thing check out these Halloween alternatives geared toward kids. First Baptist Church - Noah's Ark Party - 10/31 - 5:30-8:30 - more info
Costumes and Decor: Spirit Halloween - 4428 Kostoryz Road @ Gollihar Party City - Moore Plaza Spencer's Gifts - Padre Staples Mall What did I miss? Email me more if you have them
Horror on TV I'm not a fan of watching movies on channels that edit them for TV normally, BUT Halloween is the exception for me because you see films only once a year on these stations that wouldn't normally air them. So you can really cram a lot of movies in and save money on rentals with these horror marathons. Here is some notable programming:
AMC MONSTERFEST For 200 nightmarish hours, we're showing the scariest, the creepiest, the best horror movies on the planet. From Sun., Oct. 23 to Mon., Oct. 31, come indulge your love of the macabre – just don’t blame the ensuing insomnia on us. Click above or here for full schedule and cool games and links
Bravo Bravo has great horror programming that runs a few times during the month. Last year's special was The_100_Scariest_Movie_Moments, a five part series that counts down the most bone-chilling moments in cinematic history. Featuring interviews, film clips, and production stills, Bravo's series of fright nights looks at scenes from a variety of movie classics. Schedule.
This year's new show is Greatest Movie Monsters. This three-part Bravo original special looks back at the most memorable and most feared monsters ever put on film. Watch as nature goes bad in the form of creatures from the deep, from the sky and men transformed into primal monsters. Then continue with a review of cinema's favorite supernatural terrors: ghosts, vampires, zombies, and forces from beyond the grave. Conclude the afternoon by watching technology run amock.
Turner Classic Movies TCM's website is thorough but hard to navigate. Check out these two great articles: 1, 2. Both list movies, but not their times. There's a Hammer Horror series, a Hitchcock series and more. If you can find an easy to read thorough horror festival, let me know.
Showtime Showtime presents a new series called Masters of Horror. 13 1-hour short films from 13 different masters of horror: Coscarelli, Carpenter, Hooper and more.
More on the way.....
