What exactly is the KEYS Weekend Magazine with Joe Hilliard(KWM)? Joe's still trying to figure that out and every broadcast gets us a little closer to figuring it out.
Let's start with what we do know.
KWM is a radio talk/entertainment show on NewsTalk 1440 KEYS AM airing in Corpus Christi, TX on Saturdays from 11am-Noon. At this time the show is NOT available in any format outside of live on-air broadcast. One of KWM's primary purposes is to expose listeners to a wide variety of things going on around the Coastal Bend with a heavy leaning into The Arts and to discuss local Quality of Life issues. You will likely hear loose conversation about something Corpus Christi, an interview with a local newsmaker or one of several rotating segments such as: WEIRD CORPUS CHRISTI, THE BACK PORCH, DR. JOE, THE GOLDEN KEY AWARDS, or ULTIMATE MUSIC MASTER.
Joe has said many times that getting the word spread about KWM is an epic battle of assumptions.
Assumption #1: KWM is a conservative talk show
NewsTalk 1440 KEYS follows a conservative talk radio format. On weekends and late nights there are shifts to subject-oriented talk (gardening, automotive, finances, etc). Because a majority of shows on NewsTalk 1440 KEYS lean conservative this is an easy assumption to make. Saturdays on KEYS are purposefully non-political. KWM is nestled between a gardening show and a financial show. Joe doesn't talk politics and rarely, if ever, discusses his own personal political beliefs. His philosophy is to leave that to the weekday guys who do a much better job at the political stuff.
Assumption #2: KWM is a 'Movie Show'
In it's old format, there was an hour of movie talk. Now, though, Joe rarely talks movies leaving his movie talk to his weekly international podcast, The Movie Hour (available online here). Joe is a movie lover and has a passion for film culture events. EJoe often dwells on pop culture and pop culture trends talking at length about music, books and television during the first two hours, but otherwise fills the show with CC-specific interests including what events are going on that you would want to know about and CC-interest guests and discussions. In fact, one thing that sets KWM apart from all other local talk shows is that Joe rarely will discuss national topics. Joe and his listeners calls themselves 'Students of Corpus Christi.' There's too much in CC to discuss to need to fall back on national issues.
Who is Joe Hilliard?
The short answer: a truly remarkable and amazing man.
Joe Hilliard grew up in Corpus Christi, graduating from Mary Carroll High School in 1990. Upon graduation, Joe left for college (Baylor University in Waco, TX) where he left with his MBA. After working a few years in Dallas and Houston, Joe and his family decided to move back to Corpus Christi to be closer to family. Although he came back home to a real job he began training his 'extracurricular' sights on local talk radio. Driving around in Houston traffic for five years, Joe became an armchair quarterback of their local and national talk radio scene (just like YOU are an armchair quarterback of your city's talk radio....c'mon.....admit it). One Houston talent was SO bad with the a drive home show in Houston's largest market that Joe said, "If this guy could have a CAREER in such a major market, I can do this!" When first moving back to CC, Joe began writing a film column for a local magazine, FYI. He began sending his article to John Gifford, program director of KEYS with the goal of sitting in on The Eric Von Wade Show's weekly Smoking in the Boys Room segment, a humorous discussion of pop culture without politics (mostly). After a year of joining Eric on Thursdays, KWM became available and Joe lobbied Gifford for the spot.
Now with his own show, the daunting question came: what do you fill three hours with? It is a lot harder than the armchair quarterbacks can imagine. The first piece of KWM that Joe knew he wanted was Movie Hour. The reasoning was that everyone watched movies--more so one might imagine than sports. There are entire radio stations devoted to sports--why not an hour a week devoted to movies?
The saga continues soon....check back.
