THE SEMINFINALS - JOE'S THOUGHTS
 Hi, sexies. Joe here giving Intern Ricky a break. Another Saturday has come and gone and that can only mean one painful thing: we had to say good bye to 10 more very worthy, very sexy people.
For the sexies leaving us, there are two things to consider:
1) You can still actively participate by directing your voting blocs to your new, favorite candidate. Just like Obama had to begin wooing Hillary supporters and McCain worked hard to attract Huckabee folks, so should Round Three contestants try to grab the Sausley and Castro camps. Those eliminated might consider a formal declaration of support. Let's speculate a little shall we? Bianca would try to keep in in the KRIS family: Lauren Williamson. Ditto for Regina Garcia: Katia (Sorry, Sabrina, all props have to go to the queen lion). Wouldn't you imagine the KORO ladies WOULDN'T want the competition to win? All Evonne Gottsch support will go to Jessica DB through the biz connection, but Carol Scott...she's the wild card!
2) Consider yourself a shoo-in to participate again next year. I've put together a list of tips for you as you prep what is sure to be the most exciting time of your year.
First of all, DON'T MOVE! We need each and everyone of you sexying up our fair city for many years to come. I've considered stripping Dave Mazza of all 2008 titles, but he earned his votes so I reconsidered. I would also suggest that perhaps you hit the gym with a little more dedication: perhaps a few hundred more crunches in your schedule between now and January 2009 will put you past Round Two...remember, the treadmill is your friend. Lastly, consider manufacturing a scandal. Team up with another eliminee and get 'caught' in a ridiculous PDA at La Palmera with a Caller Times reporter 'coincidentally' in the vicinity. This would do wonders for you both come 2010.
All right, Semi-finalists: The competition just got serious.

So here we are. Originally, the contestants thought it was a hoot to be in this thing. They didn't care if they won or not. They'd get a little attention...Their name bandied around a cocktail party or two...their name on the radio for a couple of weeks. But now something's happened. Some people out there, maybe the contestants told them about the contest...maybe they didn't...see something in each contestant. Something, maybe, they don't see in themselves? 'The people' want these contestants here in the competition. Contestants, can you let them down now?

THE CALLER IS SEXY...AGAIN
 Leanne Libby, a Round One nominee and columnist for The Caller Times wrote about her nomination and the contest in her column today in the paper. Being as objective as possible, it's a very well written column blending skepticism, sarcasm and humor. click here to read it. Libby, sadly, was eliminated yesterday and won't be going into Round Two. In the column, Libby speculates a bit and uses some exaggeration for humor. Again, it's a great piece, but there are a few points we'd like to reply to in the interest of full, sexy transparency. The comments below are not criticism of the article, but rather elaboration on some of the things she brings up that would have normally been kept behind the scenes.
"Joe's charming group e-mail informed me it is an honor to be nominated.
'You guys are an elite group,' he wrote, 'a fraternity of the local glitterati. ... It's all in fun and people LOVE this thing for the same reason they buy Star and (National) Enquirer and Us Weekly. YOU are the (Corpus Christi) Britneys, Lindsays, Brads and Georges.'"
Before the contest begins all of the nominees receive an email that they are in the contest. We would rather they find out from us than from a friend. In the email we discuss not only how much of an honor it is to be nominated, but tell them what they already know: how important it would be to them to 'win.' It IS a 'fraternity'...a very difficult one to crack. If we had to boil down email received about the contest into broad topics, one near the top would be complaints and justifications about how hopeful nominees ARE celebrities (as opposed to all evidence to the contrary). People out there would kill to be in the contest, but, unlike Libby (and all the other nominees), simply DO NOT have the celebrity juice to be involved.
Charming? Always.
'I won't be on the cover of Glamour any time soon (or ever) but I have to ask Joe about the male lineup. In a city of surfers, baseball and military might, is this really the cream of the hottie crop?'
Name a local (lives in CC) surfer or 'military man' who is a celebrity. Are there sexy surfers? No doubt. Are there sexy NAS dudes? Of course. Can 50% of a randomly polled CC audience name one? No. Does Brad Lomax count? (surfer). It's tougher to put this together than one might think. Hooks would have counted, but none were nominated. (nor were any non-celeb surfers or miliatry personel).
'In the spirit of a collaborative Corpus Christi, can we just crown the impossibly cute anchorwoman Katia Uriarte and IceRay-by-way-of-Quebec Justin Quenneville and be done with it?'
Both were nominated last year but neither won. The people choose.
I'm sure it's purely coincidence that this panel of pretties is media heavy. My finely-tuned journalism skills tell me this may be a cheap ploy for publicity for the show...
This certainly is not a far-fetched theory. However it goes back to the surfer/military comment above: who are the people that the average citizen knows about? Who are the CC celebrities? They are the newscasters, public servants who get tv time etc. Outside of the occasional Caller article, no tv stations have run stories on the contest that we know of so the publicity-seeking plan has backfired. ROUND ONE - 3 HOURS LEFT
 This thing is sooooo tight. If you are cheering on your favorite candidate I promise they could use a few more votes. Better spread the word. Prediction: Someone will be eliminated from round one who only needed 5 votes or less to stay in.
 Today, we rotated reveals begining at 7AM. When a new game's information went up, the old game came down. At some point this afternoon we'll go to Sexy Media Blackout--at that point no new information until Tomorrow's show when Round Two contestants will be revealed.

SO HOW DO I USE THIS INFO?
 Since day one of voting people have been emailing requests for sneak peeks of information. Some of you are enjoying the information. For some of you it just makes things confusing. We believe that if you pay close attention you can take yesterday, today, tomorrow's reveals and determine 75% of the field order. 'Sixteenth Place' shows a) where certain contestants are and allows speculation to which 15 are above them and who might be below them in vote count, b) that a snapshot at any given time of the vote count changes dramatically hour to hour. And this is because, c) THIS RACE IS INCREDIBLY CLOSE. How close? Find out tomorrow when we play ON THE BUBBLE. On The Bubble reveals the contestants that could be IN or OUT of Round Two if they OR one or more contestants recieved a mere 5(!!) votes. In many cases 5 votes for one contestant or a combination of a few contestants would keep them in or take them out. You'll be amazed how tight this thing is.

HALFWAY THOUGHTS - 700 VOTES
We're halfway through round one and the game is, in a nutshell, completely different than last year...the behind the scenes drama is fascinating. Of course there are some new players so that changes things up, but if you could only see how the votes are coming in the way we do. (but of course you can't). Contestants advance in huge chunks, then are eclipsed, then come back. It's a seesaw between people you'd expect with a lot of surprises coming in. There are 15 spots open for both genders. Tomorrow we'll let you know who's in 16th place updated hourly. Coming Friday: ON THE BUBBLE. Too much fun. Spread the word.

NOMINATIONS UPDATED; VOTING OPENS
It took a while, but all the nominations are finally posted. From last year, there are 16 new entries ranging from the lead singers of local bands to the contest's first city councilwoman. Very pleased with the entries and believe that this year will be great. The 'polls' are open a few hours early and SEXY NEWSLETTER subscribers got a sneak peek email of that situation.

REAL PEOPLE AREN'T SEXY
We're pulling the plug on the 'Real People' category. All the noms are sexy, but there simply aren't enough to have a wide field. Just celebs in 2009 after all. We'll try Real People again next year. Again, the conversation is still all about celeb worship even in a smaller community such as CC. We as a culture simply love to see what 'they' are up to.

Well, it seems brain drain affects sexy people too. Last year's co-winner as the male half of Sexiest Couple, Dave Mazza and Crystal George, and CC's 2008's Sexiest Weatherman Dave Mazza is moving to San Antonio to do the weather up there at WOAI. KWM will never begrudge someone of making a better life for themselves elsewhere, but the city just...what is it?...feels a little less sexy in 2009. Congratulations and good bye, Dave. Is Crystal leaving right behind you?

SEXY EMERGES FROM HIBERNATION
It's that time again...time to get sexy. Nominations begin NOW for Sexy 2009. This year, there are plenty of changes including a new category: 'real people'. That's right: we're picking celebrities AND 'real people'. We are also putting together a firm finish date to answer the very real criticism from last year about the contest taking WAY too long. The nomination period lasts from today until some time in December. Voting begins in early January. There will be four weekly rounds. The contest ENDS and winners are announced on January 31, 2009. What is 'CC's SEXIEST PEOPLE?'
CC's Sexiest People is an on-air contest that occurs annually on KWM in January. Starting in 2008, it was in instant success. It begins January 3, 2009 and ends January 31, 2009. There will be 4 one-week-long online voting rounds.
Voting Round 1: January 3-9, 2009 - creates the Top Fifteen List of men and women
Voting Round 2: January 10-16 - creates the Top Ten Nine List of men and women
Voting Round 3: January 17-23 - creates the Top Five Four men and women
Voting Round 4: January 24-30 - picks the winners
Anyone can vote online.
How were these people nominated?
Between November 3, 2008 and January 2, 2009, anyone could be nominated through an online nomination process provided they were over 18 and a local celebrity.
What is considered 'a celebrity'?
Celebrity in Corpus Christi, as last year's contest showed, is a very intersting thing. The definition we are using is: a widely-recognized or famous person who commands a high degree of public and/or media attention.
To further define: a local celebrity, as far as this contest is concerned, is anyone that the AVERAGE person in our community has heard of, can identify by sight or, more academically, could have heard of had they been paying attention. If you are walking through the mall and over 50% of 'real people' around you can identify you (or should be able to, had they been paying attention), you are a celebrity.
Last year there were hurt feelings when we ruled that people weren't celebrities. This lends itself to an interesting discussion about the desire for people to be celebrities, but at the end of the day if the AVERAGE person hadn't heard of a nominee they were deemed not a celebrity and not included. Why this hurt people's feelings, we still don't understand, but it did. Please put your nominee in the appropriate category. Here is a handy chart to help you along:

Sexiness is somewhat subjective. Sexy for Sally maybe isn't sexy for Jill (or John). The contestants above were nominated. Someone found them sexy. The masses will judge their sexiness during the voting rounds.
How will voting work?
Voting begins January 3, 2009. The voting will be multi-round in one week intervals, each round eliminating contestants until we're down to one guy and one lady. To vote click the links at the top of this page.
I tried to vote but it said I'd already voted, but I hadn't already voted. Is this thing rigged?
Voting is limited to vote per IP address per round. This is not like American Idol where you can vote an unlimited number times. One vote per IP address. That means that if you are voting from a networked location, you may (depending on your network) only get one vote per office/network even if there's many computers on site. If you work at an office or home with many computers sharing the same network, then whoever votes first gets the vote for the entire network. Find a second (or third, etc.) location to vote from (ex. your house AND your office). Every year we still get emails saying that it's rigged bc of this situation. Last year after thousands of votes, we only received three complaints about this situation (saying you'd already voted when you hadn't). After reexplaining (many times painstakingly so) they finally understood that they were on a shared network. We don't care who wins nor do we have a vested interest in one person winning over another. Votes decide.
Will any nominees be on the show?
Only those that have a sense of humor.
