Filmmaker Mandiy Miller sets up a scene with friend and actress, Emmalee Hines, during filming of a Corpus Christi 7-Day Film Project movie Friday at Bayside Park in Portland. Miller, competing for the first time, joins 13 returning teams and about 20 other first timers for the week-long competition.

Organizers of the 7 Day Film Project hope the event's sequel will be bigger and better than the original.
Official dates have been announced for the second annual film competition, presented by the Corpus Christi Film Society. The project is an opportunity for local filmmakers to demonstrate their skills and for the Coastal Bend to show off its growing filmmaking population.

A downtown art walk is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event features a Harry Potter Festival at La Retama Park, 500 block of Mesquite Street, with treats, arts and crafts and a costume contest. House of Rock, 511 Starr St., will host the re-screening of films from Corpus Christi 7 Day Film Project.

More than a week ago, 37 aspiring filmmakers of all ages and walks of life packed into the House of Rock downtown and accepted a challenge.
Each would have seven days to write, cast, direct, edit and score a short film. (In the interest of full disclosure, I worked on a team as a scriptwriter.)

Most people who are making films independently are hoping to be discovered, said Joe Hilliard, the mastermind behind the Corpus Christi 7-Day Film Project.
Hilliard, founder of the Corpus Christi Film Society, engineered the annual contest event to celebrate area filmmakers--amateurs and veterans. He based the concept on similar competitions around the country, including a 48-hour event.
